Camporee

APRIL 2007 - Written by Eric, Troop Historian
On April 23-24 several scouts and adults went to Camporee held at Rancho Seco. This is a weekend of competition among several boy scout troops in the area. After setting up camp, they began their competitions. They did a first aid relay race, a compass course, the lazy gator, a tomahawk throw, archery, tug-a-war, and a few other activities. As the evening approached, a few of the scouts competed in the dutch oven cook-off. During the night it rained heavily and flooded the tents. Besides the weather the boys had a good time.

What is Camporee? A Camporee is many things – outdoor “fun” for boys, the thumping of feet on the way to an evening campfire and the aroma of a breakfast or dinner cooking. It is the patter of rain on tents at night. It is the ripple of windblown flags in the morning sun. It is catching the idea of teamwork and team play by using the patrol method. It's learning to get along with other boys, and doing their share in common duties.

A Camporee starts with the recognition that a patrol is the basic Scout unit. The patrol demonstrates its very best techniques and shares its experiences with other patrols as well as troops. Our theme attempts to experience Scouting at its best, by combining basic Scouting skills in challenging inter-patrol competition using skills in flint and steel, dutch oven cooking, fire building, first aid, knots and lashings, and map and compass, and ending with a rousing campfire.
