JULY 2009 - Written by Thomas, T394 Historian Freel Peak was a 6 mile hike practice hike for the high adventure trip. We started at 9:20 on our adventure. The first part was ok. There was a slight incline for about a quarter of a mile. Everyone was talking and having a great time. … HEE HEE, but not for long. We came to what looked like a camp site with a fire pit. We stopped to take some pictures. After that, people continued to talk. The middle portion of the hike is when the difficulty increased. We were hiking on a whole bunch of stones and little rocks. There were some really nice views of hill sides and far off scenery. When we got to the saddle in between the hills we took a break. It was really challenging, but fun during the switchbacks. Everyone was focused on the hike and the chatting stopped. Neil and Thomas’ feet started to hurt. Neil saw the beginning signs of blister on his feet and ankles. His legs were starting to get really tire, as well as Thomas’. At the end of the second set of switchbacks Thomas, Neil and Brian were unable to continue the hike. They stopped with Erin and Mike while the rest of the group continued to the top of the peak. It was around 12 o’clock when we stopped for lunch. From the location we stopped for lunch we could see the rest of the group on the side of the mountain. They looked like ants. We were even lucky to see them reach the top of the peak. About an hour later, we headed back down to the beginning of the saddle trail because it looked like there was a storm forming directly above. The clouds were all gray and the sky was full of them. Surprisingly, it only sprinkled. When we arrived at the cars we all hopped in and drove to Camp Sacramento. There Paul treated all the boys to ice creams before heading back down the hill to Sacramento. While driving back, Scott announced to us that the hike was really 10 miles long.
