Summer Camp at Camp Cody

JULY 2007 - Written by Eric, Troop Historian
On the week of July 28th through August 5th several boys and a few adults went to Camp Cody. Every year our troop goes to a summer camp. This was the troop’s third year going there. At summer camp you get a chance to do many merit badges. If you are going for the first time you have to do the first aid, leatherwork, and swimming merit badges but if you have been there before you can pick your merit badges. You also get a special rank for Camp Cody. It is called Cody Pioneer for the first year scouts, but if you have gone before you can get higher ranks at Cody.

You get two free periods, one before lunch and one before dinner. During those free periods you can play horseshoes, volleyball, canoe, sail, row, kayak, or swim at the waterfront. Most of the first year scouts completed all of their merit badges but some older scouts need a few more requirements to finish their merit badges. They had a campfire every night except two. One of the nights we hiked up to Chapel Rock to sing songs and tell stories. The other night every scout went on a backpacking trip to spend the night under the stars. All first years and people taking wilderness survival had to go to Cody Meadows. Everyone else got their choice. During campfires there are skits put on by the campers and JOs, songs put on by the adults, and sometimes soda to drink.

At the end of the week the parents of the scouts come to see them, watch the water Olympics, have dinner, and watch a campfire where the counselors hand out the merit badges. The water Olympics consist of all the patrols participating in water activities. These activities include a swimming relay, a t-shirt relay, a canoe activity, a sailing race and the greasy watermelon. We only won the greasy watermelon which Joseph won. We had a lot of fun and are looking forward to camp next year.
