Summer Camp at Marin Sierra

AUGUST 2009 - Written by Thomas

Our summer camp was a very fun week long trip.   It was Brian, Eric D, Mathew, Erik P, Ryan, Max, Carson, Joseph, Neil, Adam, Gathungu, Roland, T.J, Thomas, Paul, Len, Barbara, and Terry.  We had to sign in when we first arrived at camp.  After that, we had to take the swim test.  Most of us received swimmer status.  We then had to hike our stuff up to our camp site, which was the furthest from the camp activities.  It was really tiring hiking our stuff up camp, while the leaders were driving in the cars behind us.  After we set up, we went and had our fist dinner together.  Our first day was fun.

The next day we got up and went to breakfast, it was pretty good.  After breakfast, we had a flag ceremony.  Once the flag ceremony was finished everyone went to sign up for the merit badges for the week.  Our first class started at 10 o’clock.   Classes typically ran 1 hour to 2.  There was also an all day BSA lifeguard certification. There were a few single day merit badges which were mammal study, finger printing, and geology.

At 12:00 we had lunch. The dining area was pretty cool and big.  At the end of each troop’s table was a big wooden box to put your personal dishes in.  Before we were called up to eat the staff would always say grace.   The table that was the quietest was invited to eat first.  The staff was the last to line up.

At meals we were allowed to ask a staff member to eat with you.  There was a competition between TJ, Brian and Thomas to see who could ask someone first.  Thomas won and asked the archery instructor Carol, and then Brian asked one of the nature staff Becka.  TJ asked Becka’s sister Kristen, who worked in handicrafts.

The best thing to do up there was to go the shack but we called it the chack because the sign looked like the “S” was a “C”.   Whenever we had free time we would go up there or go swimming in Lake Chub, home of the box shark.  The box shark is a mythical creature that only lived in Lake Chub.   It attacked with such power you would need to wear polarized lenses just to watch it.

On the second to last day, there was a camp fire and everyone had to do a skit.  There were some pretty good ones.  There was also an award ceremony.  We received some prizes but not too many.  We surprisingly got 1st place in the staff hunt, which was weird because we were one of the smaller troops.  You would think one of the bigger troops would cover more ground.  Our team was called the Butterflies … what?

The next morning everybody went home it had been a long week since they slept in their own bed. I bet everybody slept good that night.
