Yosemite, Tuolumne Meadows

JULY 2009 - Written by Thomas, T394 Historian

We had been planning our trip to Yosemite for months. We had done 3 practice hikes in preparation for the altitude, domes and peeks.  When we first got there we did as always we set up camp.   We brought an easy up just in case it rained but instead used it over the stoves. We set up the tents and the chairs around the fire pit. We then loaded all the food into the bear boxes. We also put any personal gear like toothpaste, soap, deodorant into another bear box.  We were not taking any chance.

The first hike we did was to Dog Lake to fish ad wade in the water.   From there we hiked to Lenbrook Dome it was a semi-hard hike.  It increased difficulty near the top of the dome because it was like a little slanted wall with a little crack in it to get a foot hold.  When we reached the top we sat down at the highest point and had lunch that we had prepared earlier at camp.  A lot of the boys wanted to go after we ate but some didn't because we had only been up there for 5 or 6 minutes.  We ended up staying for a good 30 minutes.  Our way back down was easy.  When we reached the bottom we retrieved our stuff from behind a big rock.

On our way back down we crossed a street and found a really cool swimming hole in TM Lake.  It was really cold, most of us slipped in the water rather than slowly going in on our own. We were in for like 6 or 7 minutes, that is about all we could handle (BURRRRR).   Then we sat in the sun to warm up.  We ended up getting back in the water again for another 15 minutes, but it was so cold.   After that we took a bus down the road a bit then hiked back to camp.  The lady on the bus was really mean, she was like you have to get off now.  It was like another mile to the camp and not even our camp site.  It was so tiring, but we were able to see a weather station and some deer on our way back.

The next hike we did was from Saddleback Lake up to a water fall that fed into the lake. It was a 7 mile hike and we also didn't use a trail half the time.  When we got up there it was cold but we had to make the most of it.   All of the boys wanted to do there own thing, some went and sat by the water, a few of us played cards and the rest went fishing.  On our way back we followed the trail the whole way instead of walking randomly down.  We had to cross the river on stepping stones.  We saw some people with lamas, we even got to pet them.  They felt like they needed a bath.  Their teeth were really messed up too.  We were all really tired when we got back to camp.

Our 3rd hike was up Puppy Dome our easy hike, but before we did that we went to the museum for a while.  Then we hiked Puppy Dome it wasn't even a quarter of a mile but was still challenging to do. When we got o the top we took some pictures and threw some stones off the ledge.  Then we hiked back down another way and went to the TM River again.

The final big hike we did was to Elizabeth Lake it was a mile or so but a thousand foot gain.  It was really challenging we stopped quite a bit because it was really steep.  When we got to the lake we split up into groups to do our own things some played cards, some did a nature hike, and some fished. When we went on the nature hike, Paul cast with a fly rod and had 4 bites out of 7 but we did catch and release.  They were really beautiful Brook trout.  We went back to camp and we were thinking of going to this lake we had visited 2 times already.  Both visits we had buried someone in the sand.  The water wasn't really cold but no one liked to stay in for more than 10 minutes except for Max and Thomas.

Saturday night we started to pack things up here and there like the Easy up and the patrol boxes. The next morning everybody woke up and had breakfast and made their lunch to take on the road.  We stopped at Bodie Ghost Town for a while then headed on our way home.
