Cold Weather Camping: Be Prepared!

WHAT TO WEAR:

  • Upper Body: undershirt, sweater, and warm parker.
  • Lower Body: Long johns, trousers, and shell trousers.
  • Wool cap, scarf, gloves or mittens, insulated socks (wool over cotton is good), waterproof footwear.
  • Fabrics: wool and polypropelene are best. Cotton, including jeans, are the worst especially when wet.

EQUIPMENT CHECKLIST:

  • Two complete changes of clothing
  • Heavy parka
  • Boots and spare shoes (waterproof or rubber)
  • Socks and more socks
  • Long underwear
  • Long pants, wool or blend (no jeans)
  • Gaiters or heavy rubber bands (for bottom of pant legs)
  • Shell pants (waterproof)
  • Long sleeve shirt (wool or fleece ok, no cotton)
  • Sweater (wool or blended)
  • Cap and scarf
  • Gloves or mittens (waterproof)
  • Rain gear
  • Lots of plastic bags
  • Compass
  • Water bottle
  • Flashlight
  • Duffle bag or backpack
  • Sleeping bag (thick, last least 20 degree rating preferred)
  • Insulation pads
  • Toiletries
  • Towel
  • Soap
  • Medications (give to adult in charge)
  • Camera and film
  • Patrol first aid kit
  • Boy Scout Handbook
  • Notebook and pen
